“10-Year-Old Girl Dies from Brain Tumor Misdiagnosed as Eye Strain”

Date:

A 10-year-old girl, initially thought to be suffering from eye strain due to excessive tablet use, tragically passed away after her symptoms revealed a deadly brain tumor. Myla Lilly Broadey-Meears lost her battle with an aggressive diffuse midline glioma, diagnosed just months after experiencing headaches and dizziness during a family holiday in North Yorkshire.

Upon exhibiting symptoms like sickness, headaches, and balance issues, Myla was taken to Specsavers by her mother, Chantelle Broadey. Initially attributing the symptoms to eye strain from digital activities, they were shocked to discover a 7-10cm tumor during an eye examination. Myla underwent surgery to remove 60% of the mass at Sheffield Children’s Hospital and later endured 30 rounds of radiotherapy. Despite the family’s efforts, Myla succumbed to the illness on January 15.

Chantelle fondly remembers her daughter as an “incredibly brave and beautiful little girl” who enjoyed activities like cheerleading, camping, and shopping with her mom. Reflecting on the sudden turn of events, Chantelle regrets not recognizing the early signs sooner and urges parents to be vigilant about unusual symptoms in children.

Following the diagnosis, Myla’s health deteriorated, leaving her with left-side weakness and a significant change in behavior. Chantelle, who was also caring for a newborn son, Tommy, during Myla’s treatment, emphasized the challenging journey faced by their family. Despite the grim prognosis, Myla’s resilience and fighting spirit were evident as she battled for six months before her untimely passing.

In memory of Myla, Chantelle is organizing a Twilight Walk on March 20 to raise funds for The Brain Tumour Charity. This initiative coincides with Brain Tumour Awareness Month in March and aims to keep Myla’s legacy alive while spreading awareness about childhood brain tumors. Full event details can be found on the dedicated Facebook page.

Myla’s father, Zak Meears, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of their beloved daughter, emphasizing her enduring impact and loving nature within the family. The community is invited to join the Twilight Walk and support the cause in honor of Myla’s memory.
