Gary Southgate’s dream of showcasing the stories of the “Valley of Hidden Secrets” in southwest Saskatchewan’s Frenchman River Valley has come to life with the launch of Eastend Scenic Rail Tours. The journey began when Southgate, a farmer from North Battleford, Saskatchewan, started collecting old trains in 2013 with the vision of putting them back into operation.
His passion for trains dates back to his childhood, watching steam locomotives pass by from Biggar to North Battleford. Starting with a 1929 Canadian Pacific Railway steam locomotive, Southgate expanded his collection to include CN equipment, aiming to recreate the nostalgic feel of the old Super Continental passenger trains. The collection has grown significantly, with numerous rail cars saved from salvage yards for restoration and potential museum use.
The scenic train rides through the picturesque River Valley have captivated passengers, offering views of the unique geography of the region. Great Western Railway train engineer Joe Searle praised Southgate’s efforts in preserving the historical equipment and providing a glimpse into the province’s past.
Despite facing challenges, including disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Southgate remains determined to make his venture a success. Eastend Scenic Rail Tours has already conducted several trips with the support of Great Western Railway staff, attracting visitors from various locations. Southgate envisions further developments, such as an RV park, a museum, and winter maintenance facilities at the railyard.
Looking ahead, Southgate is optimistic about the future of his rail tours and hopes to leave a lasting legacy that celebrates the history of Eastend and Canada. His dedication and perseverance reflect his commitment to preserving heritage and creating a unique experience for tourists and locals alike.
