A former Conservative justice minister has suggested that all drugs should be legalized after facing charges related to possession of crystal meth and other narcotics. Crispin Blunt admitted to having GBL, cannabis, methamphetamine, and methylamphetamine during a police raid at his residence in 2023. Blunt claimed his involvement in drug-fueled chemsex parties was to gain insights for government policy-making.
Chemsex, which involves using drugs to enhance sexual experiences, was a topic Blunt discussed as he criticized former colleagues for their stance on drug policies. He told the court about being blackmailed by his former dealer, who accused him and his partner falsely. Blunt expressed frustration over being charged and stated that his time in Government had led him to believe that the prohibition of narcotics was a global disaster.
During his court appearance, the ex-MP for Reigate, who served in Parliament from 1997 to 2024, argued that politicians’ simplistic view on drugs without considering the consequences was flawed. Blunt emphasized that his personal experiences had shaped his advocacy for drug policy reforms. He recounted a situation where a builder he befriended at a party later extorted money from him by making false accusations.
Blunt, a former British Army officer, mentioned a connection between his support for Palestine and his legal troubles, accusing former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak of involvement in war crimes. The Deputy Chief Magistrate, Tan Ikram, fined Blunt £1,200, highlighting the importance of upholding the Rule of Law and the impact of Blunt’s actions on public trust.
Blunt was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge and costs. Following the police raid in October 2023, he lost his Conservative Party membership and later resigned as an MP during the 2024 general election. Prosecutor Zarah Dickinson described Blunt as composed during the raid, where officers discovered various drugs, including crystal meth, GBL, and cannabis, along with drug-related paraphernalia.
Having a daughter and a son, Blunt publicly disclosed his homosexuality in 2010 after separating from his wife.
