The Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA), responsible for overseeing the nation’s music charts, declared that tracks entirely created by artificial intelligence (AI) would no longer be permitted on the ARIA charts. ARIA’s spokesperson, Andrew Knowles, emphasized that recordings must have a substantial human element to be eligible for chart inclusion.
Tracks where generative AI primarily contributes to the creative aspects will be disqualified from the charts. Notably, if AI generates crucial elements such as lead vocals or instruments, the recording will be ineligible. ARIA also reserves the right to eliminate recordings suspected of manipulating streams or charts and mandates compliance with copyright laws.
The modifications aim to uphold the essence of human artistry in music amid the rapid evolution of AI technology. ARIA’s chief executive, Annabelle Herd, affirmed the organization’s commitment to maintaining the charts as a transparent reflection of Australia’s music landscape.
The decision follows the controversy surrounding DJ and producer Josh Fawaz’s rendition of “Like a Prayer,” featuring AI-generated vocals and drums, which garnered significant chart success. Despite reaching high chart positions, Fawaz faced criticism for allegedly relying entirely on AI for music production.
Starting next week, tracks solely created by AI will be removed from the ARIA charts. However, compositions where AI plays a minor role alongside human performance will still be considered. ARIA confirmed that Fawaz’s cover did not meet the eligibility criteria based on the provided information.
