In the vast emptiness of a deserted Campbell Soup factory in Toronto’s west end, Canada’s minister of artificial intelligence and digital innovation unveiled the federal government’s largest investment in homegrown technology yet. This initiative aims to advance artificial intelligence, medical science, and other key sectors of the economy. Amidst the Canada-U.S. trade tensions, Evan Solomon emphasized national pride while announcing $195 million in repayable federal funding for Toronto-based Xanadu Quantum Technologies.
Solomon highlighted Canada’s commitment to making significant strides in innovation, stating, “We are going to not just make a bet on solving the biggest problems in the world, and being the best in the world… We’re going to do it big, fearlessly.”
Established in 2016, Xanadu specializes in developing software and quantum computers using light-based technology. Unlike traditional computers that rely on electricity and generate heat, Xanadu’s quantum computers operate at room temperature by guiding light particles without electrical resistance.
The government’s funding will support Xanadu in setting up advanced manufacturing for its fault-tolerant photonic quantum computers in a renovated Campbell’s Soup factory. This facility, spanning 158,000 square feet and costing $893 million, is expected to employ 275 workers.
Xanadu’s breakthrough chip, capable of generating error-resistant photonic qubits, offers significant advancements in quantum computing. This technology is crucial for national security, as countries with fault-tolerant quantum computers could potentially breach cybersecurity systems.
Xanadu’s CEO, Christian Weedbrook, expressed gratitude for the federal funding, emphasizing the company’s commitment to expanding its presence in Canada. The government’s investment in Xanadu is part of its broader strategy to bolster Canada’s position in the tech industry and promote innovation.
