William F. Baker, along with his wife, has owned Henry Island for the past 35 years. Now, at the age of 84, Baker is looking to sell the nearly 90-hectare island to a buyer who will maintain its natural state.
Situated just a 20-minute boat ride from Port Hood, N.S., Henry Island boasts a four-bedroom family residence as well as an operational lighthouse that was established on the island back in 1901.
Originally purchased by the Bakers in 1991, the island has served as a tranquil retreat from their bustling lives in New York City. Baker, known for his successful career as a broadcaster in the U.S., including a stint as the president of the PBS flagship station in New York for two decades, has a deep affinity for lighthouses and the idea of owning an island. This passion led him to explore Canada’s East Coast.
Describing lighthouses as symbols of selflessness and assistance without expecting anything in return, Baker expressed his admiration for their historical significance. The island has been listed for sale for nearly $7 million Cdn for the past two years, attracting interest from potential buyers in Ontario, the U.S., and Germany.
