Since December 14, 2025, Jake Reiner has been experiencing a strange juxtaposition of time – where it feels like both an eternity and a fleeting moment. During his first interview with KABC-TV’s Mark Cota-Robles, Jake expressed how the past eight months since the tragic discovery of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, have been a surreal blur. Their son, Nick Reiner, aged 32, was subsequently arrested and charged with their murder.
Jake described the daily struggle of waking up to the harsh reality of his situation, stating, “Every moment I wake up, I’m reminded of my reality, and you’re living through that every single day.”
During the emotional interview released recently, Jake recounted the chilling phone call from his sister, Romy, who broke the devastating news to him on that fateful day.
Nick Reiner was formally charged on July 20 with two counts of first-degree murder in relation to the deaths of his renowned filmmaker and activist father, Rob Reiner, and his mother, Michele, a talented photographer and producer. Despite the charges, Nick pleaded not guilty.
The indictment, made public on August 12 by the LA County grand jury, alleged that Nick, who had a well-documented history of mental health issues and addiction struggles, planned the attack on his parents.
In a joint project in 2016, Rob and Nick Reiner collaborated on a film titled Being Charlie, inspired by Nick’s personal battles with addiction. The movie depicted the story of a rebellious teenage son of a politician father who grapples with addiction and romance.
Reflecting on the film, Rob expressed that it was his most intimate work and brought him closer to his son.
In the recent interview, Jake reiterated his profound sense of loss, referring to it as losing half of his family due to Nick’s incarceration. He struggled to express the complex mix of emotions towards his brother, stating, “I will never understand why this happened.” The interview captured his feelings of anger, frustration, and acceptance towards the tragic turn of events.
