Iran reported on Wednesday that it had carried out attacks on 10 ships near the Strait of Hormuz in response to the sinking of five Iranian oil tankers by the U.S. This exchange marked the largest series of retaliatory strikes on shipping by both sides since the commencement of the six-month-long conflict. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran disclosed that it had launched a ballistic missile assault on a U.S. base near Al Azraq in eastern Jordan. Additionally, they claimed to have targeted two U.S. vessels and eight oil tankers that were attempting to traverse a section of the Strait of Hormuz designated as off-limits by Iran.
The skirmishes in the critical waterway caused a surge in oil prices, with the international Brent crude benchmark surpassing $100 per barrel for the first time since July. The fluctuating conflict has led to price fluctuations, with hopes of a safe passage for tankers out of the Persian Gulf dashed. The escalating tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Iran-aligned Houthis in Yemen have added to the uncertainty in energy markets. The recent Houthi attacks on four cities in Saudi Arabia resulted in significant fires at oil installations, causing injuries to 73 individuals.
The impact of these events has reverberated globally, affecting American consumers who have witnessed a notable increase in gasoline prices. Average prices in the U.S. reached $4.15 per gallon for regular gasoline and $5.90 per gallon for diesel, representing a substantial year-over-year escalation. The ongoing hostilities have led to a dim outlook for a lasting resolution before the upcoming U.S. midterm elections.
In Canada, gas prices have also surged, prompting the government to extend the gas tax holiday until the end of January. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards announced the establishment of a restricted maritime area stretching from Chabahar in Iran into parts of the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. The announcement followed Iran’s plans to impose a restricted zone outside the Strait of Hormuz.
Amidst these developments, a drone strike targeted a tanker carrying two million barrels of Iraqi fuel oil in Iraqi territorial waters, causing a fire onboard. Reports of vessels being hit by disabling fire in the northern Gulf and Gulf of Oman emerged, underscoring the widespread impact of the conflict. Iran’s actions have disrupted maritime traffic through the vital Strait of Hormuz, a key passage for global oil shipments, further complicating the energy landscape.
As the situation continues to unfold, Iran has emphasized its intent to enforce a broader off-limits zone around the strait and deploy advanced missiles against U.S. ships. The conflict has escalated with both sides engaging in military actions, leading to disruptions in oil transportation routes and heightened geopolitical tensions in the region.
