“Newsom predicts Trump will resume Canada talks”

Date:

California Governor Gavin Newsom predicts that internal pressure within the Republican Party will compel U.S. President Donald Trump to resume negotiations with Canada. In an interview with CBC News’ chief political correspondent Rosemary Barton, Newsom highlighted the current challenges facing Trump within his own party as Republicans face the upcoming midterm elections.

Following the breakdown of trade talks between Canada and the U.S., Newsom expressed confidence that Trump will be compelled to return to the negotiating table promptly. He emphasized California’s disapproval of Trump’s actions towards Canada, stating, “We do not in any way, shape, or form condone the behavior of this president as it relates to how he’s treated you.”

The ongoing trade war has significantly impacted California, particularly its wine industry, with Canadian markets being crucial for California wine exports. Newsom acknowledged the hardships faced by California wine producers due to the trade war, attributing the decline in exports to Trump’s policies.

Despite the challenges, Newsom commended Prime Minister Mark Carney’s approach in dealing with Trump, noting that strength and conviction are essential when negotiating with the U.S. president. Newsom’s vocal criticism of Trump’s tariffs is seen as a principled stance rather than a strategic move for potential political ambitions, although he did not rule out the possibility of running for higher office in the future.

Newsom, who is not seeking re-election as governor of California, is speculated to be a Democratic contender for the 2028 presidential race. His unwavering stance against Trump’s tariffs reflects his commitment to advocating for California’s interests on the national stage.
