Due to overfishing and habitat destruction, about 99% of the historic lake sturgeon population has been lost.
A study utilizing over 40 years of data on lake sturgeon captured and recaptured in the Great Lakes suggests that the recovery of these species may be a more prolonged process than previously assumed. Fisheries scientist Ed Baker from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, who led the study, indicated that there could be 400-year-old lake sturgeon swimming in the waters.
Traditionally, estimating a sturgeon’s age involved counting growth rings in its fin ray. However, as sturgeon age, their growth slows down, making it challenging to accurately determine their age using this method. Instead, researchers analyzed the growth rates of individual sturgeon over time to predict how long it takes for them to reach maturity.
The findings have significant implications for conservation efforts, especially for Trevor Pitcher, a biologist at the University of Windsor, who is involved in rebuilding lake sturgeon populations.
