As the trend towards digital-first gaming continues to grow, Atari is revisiting its 1980s classics by partnering with Activision to re-release 39 games on physical cartridges. The collaboration was announced at the recent Gamescom event in Germany, featuring titles like Pitfall, River Raid, and Megamania.
These games are playable on the Atari 2600+, a modern version of the original 2600 console from 1977. The updated console supports wireless joysticks and can be connected to modern TVs via HDMI. Released in 2023, the 2600+ also allows players to enjoy original Atari 2600 and 7800 cartridges, offering backward compatibility for those who still have the original consoles.
According to Mike Mika, studio head at Digital Eclipse, there is a continuous demand for these classic games, with a dedicated audience eager to experience nostalgia. The collaboration with Activision holds special significance as it marks a reunion after more than 40 years. Activision, founded in 1979 by former Atari developers, is now under Microsoft’s ownership and known for popular franchises like Call of Duty and Candy Crush Saga.
Atari’s journey has seen various transitions since its peak in the 1980s, passing through different owners and ventures. In recent years, the brand has refocused on its gaming roots under the leadership of CEO Wade Rosen. Atari has acquired studios like Nightdive Studios and Digital Eclipse, in addition to launching retro hardware like the Atari 2600+ and Intellivision Sprint.
Ethan Zoubek, Atari’s president, emphasized the brand’s revival efforts, aiming to reconnect with retro gaming enthusiasts and rebuild trust among fans. The company has also collaborated with original Atari artists to recreate classic box art for re-releases and introduced new collectibles like fabric patches with the games.
In a gaming market shifting towards digital content, Atari’s emphasis on physical releases and vintage gaming experiences stands out. With the resurgence of interest in physical media, especially among younger audiences, the appeal of Atari’s retro games and hardware continues to grow.
The renewed interest in physical gaming experiences is evident as Atari embraces its heritage and caters to a niche market seeking authentic retro gaming experiences. In a digital-dominated landscape, Atari’s commitment to preserving the charm of classic gaming on physical cartridges resonates with players looking for a tangible connection to gaming history.
