A massive sinkhole emerged in front of a luxurious Malibu mansion reportedly owned by actor Nicolas Cage, resulting in the driveway collapse and a subsequent gas leak on Tuesday morning. The sinkhole, estimated to be 7.5 to nine meters deep and 18 meters wide, extended into the roadway, triggering a proactive response from authorities and utility company SoCalGas.
SoCalGas managed to contain the gas leak a few hours later but decided to temporarily halt natural gas services for a portion of the street as a precaution against coastal erosion. Responding to the situation, officials declared a local emergency and issued evacuation orders for 31 properties in the vicinity.
The property, which records indicate Cage purchased in 2024, was impacted by the sinkhole. The previous owner, as reported by the New York Times, confirmed Cage as the buyer at the time of the sale. Cage’s representatives have not yet commented on the incident.
The mansion’s damage occurred during a coastal flooding advisory in the Los Angeles area due to the remnants of Hurricane Marie, which transitioned back into a tropical storm. Although the storm did not directly hit land, it brought heavy rain and hazardous waves along the Southern California coastline during the holiday weekend.
The City of Malibu highlighted that the sinkhole incident was linked to broader coastal conditions in the region and emphasized ongoing monitoring of coastal erosion at various vulnerable points, including the Pacific Coast Highway and Point Dume State Beach.
Situated between the ocean and the renowned Pacific Coast Highway, the private neighborhood where the mansion is located is subject to coastal risks. Cage, aged 62, recently featured in the Amazon series “Spider-Noir” and is set to portray John Madden in an upcoming biographical film about the NFL figure later this year. With a career spanning over 100 films, he notably won an Oscar for his performance in “Leaving Las Vegas.”
