“Russian Airstrikes in Kyiv Leave 12 Dead”

Date:

Russian airstrikes have resulted in the deaths of 12 individuals and caused injuries to several others in Kyiv and its nearby areas early on Tuesday, marking the sixth consecutive day of attacks on the Ukrainian capital. Since the onset of a full-scale invasion in 2022, Russia has intensified its aerial assaults on Ukraine amid significant battlefield setbacks.

Kyiv and its vicinity have experienced repeated drone attacks over the past five days, leading to casualties, property damage, and disruptions in daily life. The utilization of advanced jet engine-powered drones has made interception more challenging, contributing to prolonged air-raid alerts and widespread disturbance among the population.

Additional explosions were reported in Kyiv on Tuesday morning, with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha highlighting the targeting of residential zones and railway infrastructure by Russian drones and ballistic missiles during the recent intense assaults. Sybiha urged international allies to enhance economic sanctions against Russia and explore utilizing the country’s frozen assets abroad to support Ukraine’s defense efforts.

Overnight attacks in Kyiv claimed eight lives, predominantly railway workers, while a daytime drone strike caused a fire in a high-rise apartment building, injuring three individuals. Similarly, in Boryspil, located near Kyiv, four individuals lost their lives and 13 sustained injuries following an attack on a residential structure, including an Indian citizen among the casualties.

The Russian strikes also impacted a border crossing with Romania in Odesa, leaving numerous families without electricity, as confirmed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The continuous bombardment of Ukrainian cities by Moscow, previously concentrated during nighttime hours, has transitioned into daytime assaults, disrupting normal life in the capital.

According to air force spokesperson Yuriy Ihnat, Russia deployed over 2,800 jet-powered drones in August, significantly increasing their usage compared to previous months. Ukrainian forces successfully intercepted five ballistic missiles overnight and recently received a limited supply of Patriot interceptors to bolster their defense capabilities.

In a reciprocal move, Ukraine has intensified its attacks on Russia, targeting oil refineries and logistics infrastructure, including warehouses of e-commerce companies. Regional governors in Russia reported damages to civilian facilities in areas like Ust-Luga and the Samara region due to Ukrainian air assaults.

Estonia’s defence forces noted that drones involved in a Ukrainian strike against Russia briefly entered Estonian airspace, underscoring the importance of supporting Ukraine with air defense resources. Meanwhile, Russia’s defense ministry confirmed targeting military and energy installations in Kyiv, Odesa, and their surrounding regions in recent overnight operations.

Despite stalled U.S.-led peace negotiations, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy remains engaged in diplomatic efforts, having recently held discussions with U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to arrange a potential visit. The ongoing conflict with Iran has diverted some of Washington’s attention from the Ukrainian crisis.
