“UK Homes Moving Towards Internet TV by Mid-2030s”

Date:

A recent study conducted by Sky suggests that the majority of UK homes could transition to internet-based TV by the mid-2030s, potentially leading to the retirement of traditional terrestrial TV services like Freeview. This shift is driven by the increasing number of households using the internet for live and on-demand content consumption.

Various alternatives to traditional aerial TV, such as Sky’s streaming services and the Freely platform, are already available to consumers. Freely, a service linked to Freeview, offers broadband-enabled access to both live and on-demand television, integrated into many modern TVs.

The rise of internet-connected devices in households is leading to a decline in viewership of traditional broadcast TV, with more people opting for streaming services. Moreover, the future of Freeview is uncertain due to potential sharing of radio frequencies with mobile operators post-2031, making the current over-the-air transmission model less sustainable.

The cost of maintaining the existing TV infrastructure is escalating, prompting discussions within the UK government about future strategies. Nick Herm, Sky’s Group Chief Operating Officer, emphasized the potential benefits of transitioning to internet-delivered TV, highlighting the importance of inclusivity and digital advancement.

While some welcome the shift towards streaming, concerns have been raised, with a petition opposing the discontinuation of Freeview garnering significant support. Critics argue that not everyone has access to reliable internet connections required for streaming, potentially widening the digital divide.

Individuals like Lynette, who values the simplicity and accessibility of Freeview, express apprehension about the potential reliance on internet-based TV services. The debate surrounding the future of TV services continues, with further developments expected in the near future.
