Zelda Williams utilizes social media platform X selectively, reserving her presence for addressing the exploitation of her late father, actor Robin Williams. In a recent post, she expressed that the platform serves as a public arena for her to counter misinformation and safeguard her father’s legacy, despite the challenging nature of such endeavors.
Her latest use of the platform involved denouncing an AI-generated video purporting to feature private footage of Robin Williams discussing conspiracy theories before his passing in 2014. Zelda clarified that the video is fabricated and lacks credibility, criticizing the artificial and unconvincing nature of the voice impersonation.
In a tweet, she highlighted the absurdity of fans believing the video, emphasizing that any true fan would recognize the robotic and subpar quality of the voice impersonation. Zelda emphasized the importance of respecting her father’s memory and urged individuals not to exploit his likeness for personal gain or manipulation of public opinion.
Zelda Williams, known for her work as a filmmaker and director of “Lisa Frankenstein,” has been vocal about her opposition to AI deepfakes, emphasizing the significance of consent in using individuals’ likenesses for digital recreations. She condemned the practice of manipulating individuals’ images without their consent, asserting that it infringes upon their autonomy and humanity.
Having previously made a public plea to cease sending her AI-generated recreations of her father, Zelda is dedicated to upholding Robin Williams’ wishes regarding the use of his likeness. Robin Williams himself was vigilant about the commercial use of his voice, as exemplified by a dispute with Disney in 1993 over the unauthorized use of his voice for promotional purposes.
Furthermore, the Robin Williams Trust includes provisions that restrict the posthumous use of his voice or likeness until August 11, 2039, underscoring the commitment to honoring his legacy. Zelda Williams remains steadfast in her efforts to honor her father’s legacy and protect his image, stating on social media, “He protected me for years, I’ve gotta at least try and return the favor.”
