Cheshire Police Defends Lucy Letby Investigation

Cheshire Constabulary Responds to Allegations Against Investigation of Lucy Letby

The police force that probed the case of Lucy Letby, the killer nurse, has countered accusations of misconduct made by former Tory cabinet minister Sir David Davis. Davis claimed that detectives overlooked signs of failure in Letby’s unit and manipulated data against her, urging for a retrial of her murder and attempted murder convictions during a parliamentary session.

In response, Cheshire Constabulary issued a firm statement dismissing the allegations raised in the parliamentary debate. The statement emphasized the force’s confidence in the investigation’s integrity and criticized the unverified claims circulating about the case.

While acknowledging the importance of scrutiny in policing, the statement stressed the need for factual and fair examination that respects legal processes and judicial independence. The ongoing criticism surrounding the case was highlighted as potentially damaging to public trust in the criminal justice system.

Lucy Letby, a 36-year-old nurse from Hereford, is currently serving multiple life sentences for murdering seven infants and attempting to murder seven others while working at the Countess of Chester Hospital. Despite calls for a review of the police conduct by Sir David Davis, the force stands by its investigation and legal decisions.

Letby’s conviction is under review by the Criminal Cases Review Commission following unsuccessful attempts to challenge it. The case gained widespread attention through a recent Netflix documentary featuring Letby’s interactions with investigators.

In her defense, Letby explained that her incriminating notes were written during a period of emotional distress and were not confessions as claimed by the prosecution. Her sentiments during interviews and interactions with authorities were detailed in the documentary, shedding light on her mental state and reactions to the allegations against her.

Cheshire Constabulary reiterated its commitment to evidence-based discussions and victim-focused justice, expressing solidarity with the families affected by the tragic events at the heart of the case.
