Teenage Rape Victim Chooses Euthanasia in Netherlands

Date:

A teenage rape victim, Milou Verhoof from the Netherlands, tragically decided to end her life at the age of 17 through euthanasia on October 2, 2023. Seeking assistance from Dr. Menno Oosterhoff, a prominent Dutch psychiatrist known for helping young patients with mental health issues, including facilitating euthanasia, Milou’s mother, Mireille Verhoof, supported her daughter’s decision citing past traumatic experiences in her childhood.

Milou’s early life was marked by adversity, starting at 11 when her brother fell seriously ill, followed by a traumatic incident at 13 when she was raped, leading to severe depression and post-traumatic stress. Struggling with self-harm and failed suicide attempts, Milou sought help from a psychiatrist to end her life through euthanasia, eventually finding Dr. Oosterhoff who granted her wish.

On the day of her passing, the fatal injection was administered by Dr. Oosterhoff in the room where Milou grew up. She had meticulously prepared for the moment, including getting her nails done and choosing an evening gown and high heels for her burial. Her mother expressed gratitude towards Dr. Oosterhoff for his cautious approach, stating that it confirmed their belief that Milou’s suffering was unbearable.

The documentary ‘Milou’s Battle Continues’ documented her journey and sparked a heated debate on euthanasia for young individuals. While euthanasia is legal in the Netherlands primarily for terminal physical illnesses, cases related to psychological suffering have increased significantly over the years. In a recent case, a 25-year-old Spanish woman, Noelia Castillo Ramos, who became quadriplegic after a gang rape, opted for euthanasia, highlighting the ongoing discussions on medically assisted suicide.

Noelia’s decision faced opposition from her family, particularly her father, leading to a public debate on the topic in Spain. Despite the legal hurdles, she remained resolute in her choice, emphasizing her right to end her suffering. Her story shed light on the complexities surrounding medically assisted suicide and prompted discussions on the ethical aspects of such decisions.
