Millions of Gmail users will soon have the option to change their email address to a new one. Google had previously indicated this update was in the pipeline, and now it seems to be rolling out globally. In an announcement on its Gmail blog page, Google confirmed that users can switch their Google Account email from ending in gmail.com to a new address also ending in gmail.com.
This change could be a positive development, particularly for users who wish to update their username or those whose circumstances have changed. However, Google has noted an important point with this new feature.
Google emphasized that the ability to change the Google Account email is gradually being made available to all users, so the option may not be accessible to everyone immediately. The technology giant from the US clarified this in their statement.
So, how will this process unfold?
The new system will allow both the old and new email addresses to operate concurrently, ensuring that any emails sent to the current Gmail address will be automatically forwarded to the new one. Additionally, Google assures users that all their account data, including photos, messages, and emails linked to the original address, will remain unaffected.
To determine if you can switch to a new Gmail address without losing any emails, follow these steps:
– Visit myaccount.google.com/google-account-email on your computer and sign in if prompted.
– Click on Personal info at the top-left corner.
– Choose Email, then Google Account email.
– Under “Google Account email,” click on Change Google Account email.
– If the option is not visible, it may not be accessible to you yet.
– Enter the desired new username, ensuring it is not currently in use or previously deleted.
– Click on Change email and confirm by selecting Yes, change email.
– Follow the on-screen instructions.
Upon completion, your new Gmail address will become your primary account email, while the old address will be retained as an alternate email.
