“Historic Mill in Leek Engulfed in Massive Flames”

Date:

Images have captured massive flames tearing through a historic mill in Leek. Firefighters are currently battling the blaze at Big Mill, which ignited around 9 pm. The Grade-II listed building, previously unoccupied, holds planning approval for 34 residential units.

Constructed in 1857 by William Sugden, the six-story former silk mill on Mill Street was a pivotal site for Wardle & Davenport, a firm that once employed 2,500 individuals in the local silk industry. Local councilor Joe Porter expressed deep sorrow witnessing the fire at this iconic landmark.

Porter emphasized the significance of preserving historic structures like Big Mill, highlighting their irreplaceable role in national heritage. Authorities have advised the public to avoid the area as firefighters continue to combat the ongoing blaze, which is expected to last for an extended period.

The fire service has deployed multiple crews and an aerial ladder platform to address the fully engulfed building. Neighboring residents have been urged to evacuate as a safety precaution. Witnesses have described the scene as a dramatic display of flames engulfing the historic silk mill, emphasizing the need for safeguarding such architectural treasures.
