A father from the UK had to undergo surgery to remove his eye following an incident where it was injured by a stranger’s fingernail while on a vacation in Mexico. Lee Cuthbert, 46, was playing volleyball with his children, Mia and Charlie, at their hotel pool when another guest accidentally scratched his eye, causing significant bleeding.
His wife, Rachael, was shocked when she saw the injury and quickly sought medical assistance. A nurse who happened to be nearby advised them to go to the hospital. Rachael stayed with their children while Lee’s parents took him for treatment. The severity of the situation became apparent when Lee returned the next day with his eye bandaged and stitched.
Despite efforts to repair the damage, Lee lost his vision in that eye. He had to undergo further surgery to replace the iris with a prosthetic, which helped alleviate his anxiety as it appeared very realistic. The family received financial compensation from their insurance company and have adjusted to their new reality, with Lee regaining his adventurous spirit and enjoying water activities again.
Their holiday was cut short, and daily tasks became challenging for Lee without proper vision. However, with time and support, he has adapted to his circumstances and remains positive about engaging in recreational activities.
