Angela Rayner Calls for Labour Change

Date:

In a significant address, Angela Rayner has emphasized the urgency for Labour to enact change, signaling a direct challenge to Keir Starmer’s leadership. Speaking at an event organized by campaign group Mainstream, the former deputy PM highlighted that the party’s image has shifted towards representing the Establishment rather than working-class individuals, calling for a strategic shift.

Rayner, who resigned in September due to a tax controversy, strongly criticized the Government’s proposed alterations to indefinite leave to remain (ILR) for existing residents in the UK, labeling it as a “betrayal of trust.” These changes include withdrawing support for numerous asylum seekers and extending the qualification period for ILR from five to 10 years, a move that she asserted would disrupt the lives of law-abiding individuals who have made substantial contributions to the economy and society.

The remarks by Rayner follow Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood’s recent announcements regarding immigration policies, prompting Rayner to question the impact on those who have settled in the UK under specific conditions. She emphasized the importance of upholding promises made to individuals who have invested in their lives in the country, highlighting the need for stability and fairness in governmental decisions.

Rayner stressed the imperative for Labour to actively pursue the change that the public seeks, warning that time is running out for the party to demonstrate its commitment to delivering meaningful transformation. The Greater Manchester mayor, Andy Burnham, acknowledged Rayner’s concerns, suggesting that the party should heed her insights.

Additionally, Rayner’s concerns were echoed by Tony Vaughan, who coordinated a letter signed by over 100 Labour parliamentarians urging the Government to reconsider its immigration proposals. Rayner’s resignation in September amid the stamp duty controversy has positioned her as a potential successor to Starmer, who faces mounting challenges to his leadership as the upcoming local elections in May approach.

The ongoing debate surrounding immigration reforms within Labour has underscored divisions within the party, with Mahmood defending the proposed changes as aligning with Labour values. Minister Nick Thomas-Symonds acknowledged Rayner’s impatience with the pace of change, emphasizing the shared sentiment across the Government while defending Mahmood’s reforms as a balance between fairness and border security. He refrained from commenting on Rayner’s leadership potential, emphasizing that there is currently no vacancy for the party leadership role.
