“UK Crackdown on Illegal Streaming: Accountant Jailed”

Date:

Illegal streaming has seen a surge in recent times, a trend not unexpected given the ongoing financial challenges faced by many households in the UK. To save money, numerous families have turned to unofficial platforms that offer access to premium content at significantly lower prices.

Despite the appeal, illegal streaming is under intense scrutiny, with a well-known service, which provided access to content like Sky channels, being permanently shut down. This closure has left subscribers who paid for the service at a loss.

Nishan Silva, a 34-year-old from Hitchin, has been sentenced to three years in prison by UK authorities for his involvement in operating an unlawful IPTV service. The platform, known as Andy UTV and Ultimate TV Service, attracted a large following and generated substantial revenue.

Silva, a former accountant, admitted to various offenses related to copyright infringement and financial crimes at the Inner London Crown Court on October 2. He was instrumental in managing the illicit subscription-based service that allowed users in the UK to access multiple streaming services illegally, resulting in significant financial gains.

Detective Constable Daryl Fryatt from the Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit described Silva as an intelligent accountant who misused his skills and position to engage in serious criminal activities. The unit is dedicated to pursuing individuals profiting from illegal streaming and disrupting their operations to safeguard the entertainment industry’s financial stability and protect consumers from cybersecurity threats.

Matt Hibbert, Group Director of Anti-Piracy at Sky, commended the Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit for their efforts in prosecuting this case. He emphasized the commitment to combat content theft and safeguard consumers from the dangers associated with illegal streaming.

In addition to the legal consequences, illegal streaming poses risks such as exposure to malware and inappropriate content, highlighting the importance of using legitimate streaming services.
