“Wetherspoon Launches First European Pub in Spain”

Date:

Wetherspoon has recently launched its inaugural pub in Europe, situated at Alicante airport in Spain, offering a classic English breakfast alongside a variety of menu items. The new establishment, named Castell de Santa Bàrbera, is anticipated to attract a sizable number of British patrons traveling to destinations like Benidorm.

While the decor deviates from the typical Wetherspoon style, featuring Spanish tiles and cream paint instead of the customary carpet, the pub maintains its appeal with familiar menu items, albeit with some variations. Notably, the absence of British fish and chips is compensated with inventive Japanese Katsu dishes, while the traditional English breakfast remains a popular choice among homesick travelers, priced at 10.25 euros.

The pub, open seven days a week from 6am to 9pm, offers nearly 1,000 square feet of customer space and an outdoor terrace for additional seating. Wetherspoon’s founder, Tim Martin, expressed enthusiasm for the new venture, hinting at potential future expansions overseas, including airport locations.

In addition to traditional British fare, the menu features local dishes like garlic prawns, Spanish omelettes, and broken eggs. The beverage selection includes various beer options, with prices ranging from 5.95 to 7.50 euros, along with cocktails for those seeking a holiday vibe.

Customer feedback has been positive, with visitors like Paul Denovan and Karen and Steven Hooper praising the pub’s accessibility and pricing. As the pub continues to attract patrons, its strategic location at Alicante airport is expected to capitalize on the steady flow of British tourists to the region.

The new pub aligns with Wetherspoon’s plans to open approximately 30 establishments over the next year, marking a significant expansion phase. With half of these pubs to be managed directly and the remainder operated by franchisees, the initiative is projected to create 1,800 job opportunities. Despite challenges in the hospitality sector, Wetherspoon’s sustained success underscores its resilience in the market.
