Budget airline easyJet has announced the introduction of new flight routes from the UK to Lisbon, which was recently honored as Europe’s Leading City Break Destination at the 2025 World Travel Awards.
Starting this spring, easyJet will operate three new routes to Lisbon Airport, offering fares from as low as £26 for one-way trips. Flights will commence from Glasgow on March 29, followed by Liverpool on March 31, and a seasonal service from Newcastle upon Tyne running from June 22 to August 28.
While Lisbon is renowned as a popular city break destination, it also boasts proximity to stunning Portuguese coastal areas. With temperatures rising to 20°C in March and April, Lisbon is an ideal spring getaway destination. The short flight duration of under three hours makes it convenient for short breaks.
As the capital of Portugal, Lisbon stands out as a vibrant cultural center steeped in history. Alfama, its oldest district, features narrow, cobbled streets where historic trams still navigate. Travelers are recommended to board the vintage number 28 tram to explore key tourist attractions easily.
Tourists can explore the historic Castelo de São Jorge, an 11th-century Moorish castle offering panoramic views of Lisbon and the Tagus River. Nearby stands Lisbon Cathedral, a church with Romanesque and Gothic architecture dating back to the 12th century, surviving multiple earthquakes.
For an authentic experience, visitors can visit the Fado Museum or attend a Fado performance, a traditional Lisbon music genre originating from the 19th century, known for its melancholic melodies typically enjoyed in intimate settings.
An architectural marvel in Lisbon is the Oceanário, a vast oceanarium considered one of Europe’s largest, showcasing a diverse range of marine life from sharks to penguins. Situated on its own island in the river, the Oceanário is accessible via a bridge.
In the evenings, tourists can explore tascas, small family-run eateries serving authentic Portuguese cuisine. These restaurants offer rustic decor and affordable local dishes such as salted cod, sardines, and cozido à Portuguesa, a hearty Portuguese stew.
Travelers seeking beach experiences can take the Cascais Line train from Cais do Sodré to discover coastal gems like Carcavelos, known for its long sandy beach and vibrant ambiance. Further along the coast, Praia da Azarujinha and Tamariz Beach offer quieter and picturesque beach settings, perfect for relaxation.
