As the conflict between Donald Trump and Iran escalates, many of his supporters are now distancing themselves from him. It’s important to note that Trump was once a vocal critic of US military involvement in the Middle East.
In 2019, during his first term, Trump took to social media to criticize America’s decision to engage in the Middle East, calling it the “worst decision ever made.” He highlighted the enormous cost of the military operations and the sacrifices made by American soldiers.
Republican representative Thomas Massie, who opposes the conflict, responded with a 100 emoji to Trump’s post in March. Others questioned Trump’s shift in stance on the issue.
Before the recent conflict with Iran, Trump portrayed himself as an anti-war president, claiming to have ended multiple wars and aiming for the Nobel Peace Prize. However, his actions in Iran, coupled with economic challenges in the US, have led to a sharp decline in his approval ratings.
Recent polling by YouGov and The Economist shows that Trump’s approval rating has dropped by 4 percentage points since the conflict began, falling from 39% in late February to 35%.
Despite claims of ongoing negotiations with Iran, conflicting reports indicate otherwise. Iranian officials have denied any such discussions with the US.
Iran’s joint military command chief warned that they would target US and Israeli infrastructure if aggression continued. Trump, on the other hand, threatened Iran via social media, demanding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours.
The situation remains tense as both sides escalate their rhetoric and threats.
