“£850 Million in Benefits Mistakenly Issued by DWP”

Date:

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) mistakenly issued £850 million in benefits to recipients who had passed away. This error occurred when notifications of death were delayed or coincided with benefit payment schedules.

Instances of overpayment can also arise if claimants are hospitalized or in a care facility where their expenses are covered by the NHS or local authorities. Typically, disability payments like PIP cease after a 28-day hospitalization period.

The specific types of benefits that were overpaid remain undisclosed, but a combination of mental health benefits, out-of-work benefits, state pensions, and others were reportedly affected. A recent investigation found 2.6 million errors since 2021, with only a portion of the £850 million recovered thus far.

A DWP spokesperson emphasized their commitment to recovering debts reasonably and cost-effectively. They urged individuals who have lost a family member to utilize the Tell us Once service for streamlined notification of deaths to government agencies.

In an effort to combat benefit fraud, the DWP has been granted expanded authority to verify recipients’ eligibility by examining their bank account information. This includes assessing savings levels and monitoring overseas spending habits.

Despite these enhanced powers, the DWP cannot access account details directly or in real-time. Financial institutions will alert the DWP to any potential discrepancies, prompting further investigations. Benefit decisions will not be solely based on bank data.

Additionally, in certain cases, the DWP can recover owed funds directly from claimants’ bank accounts without requiring a court order. These measures aim to strengthen oversight and ensure the appropriate distribution of benefits.
