Three individuals, including a mother and her 10-month-old infant, tragically lost their lives today in a devastating incident during an Easter egg hunt in the northern region of Germany.
The unfortunate event occurred as a group of new and expecting mothers, along with their children, gathered in a wooded area near the town of Satrupholm around 11 am for an Easter celebration. Unexpectedly, a 30-meter (100-foot) tree toppled onto the group due to strong winds, resulting in a tragic outcome.
Approximately 50 individuals from a nearby residential facility catering to new mothers, pregnant women, and children had assembled for the festive occasion. Unfortunately, four people were trapped beneath the fallen tree when it collapsed.
Emergency services swiftly responded to the distressing scene following frantic calls to the police and ambulance services. A 21-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl, despite receiving immediate medical attention, succumbed to their injuries at the scene. Tragically, the 10-month-old baby girl passed away later at the hospital. An 18-year-old woman sustained severe injuries and was airlifted to the hospital for treatment.
The facility, which is part of the state-funded child welfare system, offers support to pregnant women and new mothers in need, as detailed on its website.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, grief counselors were dispatched to aid onlookers coping with the distressing incident.
Images from the scene, as shared by the Bild news site, depicted Easter eggs strewn across the ground and two victims covered with white sheets.
Notably, the area had been under a high wind warning issued by the German weather service prior to the unfortunate incident.
