In Mumbai, a British engineer involved in the coverage of Indian Premier League cricket was discovered dead in a hotel room. The engineer, Jan William Langford, aged 76, was found unconscious at the Trident Hotel in Nariman Point, Mumbai. Langford was collaborating with the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
After attending the match between Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders at Wankhede Stadium on March 29, Langford returned to his hotel room. The following day, hotel staff became concerned when Langford did not respond to numerous attempts to contact him. They eventually used a master key to enter his room and found him lying on the floor.
Upon discovering him, the hotel’s in-house doctor was called, and Langford was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The IPL Governing Council issued a statement expressing condolences for Langford’s passing, highlighting his role as a dedicated broadcast engineer for the IPL operations. The council pledged to support Langford’s family during this difficult time.
According to Nilesh Bagul, a senior police officer at Marine Drive Police Station, hotel staff attempted to contact Langford before discovering him unresponsive. Langford’s family has been informed, and plans for repatriation are pending the release of the viscera report.
An accidental death report has been filed with investigations ongoing, with no signs of foul play found during the postmortem examination. The cause of Langford’s death has not been confirmed yet.
A spokesperson from the UK Foreign Office mentioned providing support to the family of the deceased British national and maintaining communication with local authorities.
