Trump’s Iran Ceasefire Triggers US Political Upheaval

Date:

Earlier this week, Donald Trump and Iran reached a two-week ceasefire agreement, almost 40 days after the commencement of airstrikes on Iran by the United States and Israel. This brief conflict has had ripple effects not only in the Middle East but globally, as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz led to a surge in oil prices.

Despite the ceasefire, discontent is brewing in the US. Joe Kent, the National Counterterrorism Centre Director, resigned citing Trump’s alleged dishonesty regarding the war. The political upheaval continued with the dismissal of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on March 5, followed by the sacking of Attorney General Pam Bondi on April 1.

The removal of these key figures from Trump’s inner circle holds significance, sparking speculations about who might be the next to depart. Michael J Montgomery, a former US diplomat and lecturer at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, identified United States Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and United States Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth as potential candidates for replacement.

Discussions arose after Trump’s threatening remarks on Truth Social, where he initially vowed to annihilate a civilization before eventually agreeing to the ceasefire. Michael opined that Gabbard might be the next to exit due to Trump’s tendency to dismiss women more readily than men, with Hegseth likely to follow suit if military personnel resist implementing Trump’s potentially unlawful directives.

Although Trump did not carry out his civilization-ending threats, concerns persist that Hegseth and Gabbard may face dismissal in the future. Trump’s reluctance to accept responsibility and his readiness to assign blame suggest that these two individuals could be scapegoated in case of intelligence failures or flawed execution undermining his Iran strategy.

Apprehensions about Gabbard’s potential dismissal are valid, as reports suggest Trump has privately deliberated replacing her for her refusal to denounce Joe Kent’s resignation and subsequent statements. The conflict with Iran has not only highlighted Iran’s influence in the region but has also shed light on Trump’s mental state. His erratic behavior and inconsistent messaging throughout the conflict have raised questions about his psychological well-being.

Following Trump’s controversial remarks on Truth Social, where he issued profanities against Iran, concerns about his mental health intensified. Dr. John Gartner, a former John Hopkins University professor, expressed worries about Trump’s behavior, suggesting symptoms consistent with frontotemporal dementia, which could lead to impaired judgment and aggression.

Mary Trump, Trump’s niece, echoed concerns about his mental state, drawing parallels between his behavior and that of his father, who suffered from Alzheimer’s Disease. Despite mounting concerns about Trump’s health, including physical symptoms like bruising and rashes, the White House maintains that he is in good health.
