A significant transition in phone services is on the horizon for millions in the UK, urging homeowners to take action before an upcoming deadline. The traditional copper landlines that have long facilitated communication are being phased out and replaced with new technology known as Digital Voice. This upgrade utilizes broadband to enable calling capabilities with enhanced features like clearer conversations, call forwarding to smartphones, and improved call screening to combat scams and unwanted marketing messages.
Scheduled for implementation in January 2027, the impending switch has prompted BT to launch an awareness campaign fronted by Clare Balding. The initiative, titled ‘Don’t Put Off the Switch,’ aims to prompt households to assess their landlines and ensure readiness for the digital era. Recent research suggests that Brits tend to procrastinate on essential tasks, assuming functionality equates to no immediate action required.
Clare Balding emphasized the critical nature of responding promptly to communications from service providers to ensure uninterrupted landline services. BT assures customers that their phone numbers will likely remain unchanged, and costs are expected to remain stable without any increase in bills during the transition. Most households will only need to connect their current phones to their broadband hub, eliminating the necessity for engineer visits. In case of any issues, contacting the provider for assistance may be necessary.
Lucy Baker, Consumer Digital Voice Director at BT, stressed the importance of heeding messages from service providers to maintain essential connections during the significant transition to digital landlines. BT also advises customers with special requirements, such as telecare device users, to notify their provider promptly for tailored support.
Digital Voice, BT’s new home phone service, leverages broadband technology to replace copper connections and introduces modern features like Multi Call and call diversion. The improved call quality with Digital Voice eliminates crackling conversations, requiring a compatible Digital Home phone for optimal performance. Upgrading to Digital Voice for most households will not disrupt their phone usage, as the cost is bundled with the broadband service at no additional charge.
For a seamless transition to the new service, it is crucial for homeowners to stay informed and take necessary actions in a timely manner.
