“Fearsome Russian Combat Robot Unveiled: Autonomous Mortar System”

Date:

Russia has introduced a fearsome new combat robot capable of autonomously loading and firing ammunition. The experimental robot, known as the Kurier ground robotic system, is equipped with a rapid-fire mortar system and has been showcased undergoing live-fire tests for the first time.

During the trials, the mortar robot was paired with a newly unveiled Bagulnik-82 mortar module, as reported by Russian outlet RG, hinting at its potential deployment to Ukraine. In a video clip, the compact tracked robot is seen rotating its turret in a snowy terrain before launching 82mm mortar rounds at a distant target, with an automated arm swiftly reloading the mortar tube.

Remarkably, human intervention is not necessary for the robot to engage in attacks, with the reloading process completing in just five seconds. The system is designed to operate remotely on the battlefield, marking a significant advancement in automated warfare technology.

The previously undisclosed Bagulnik-82 module is believed to be derived from Russia’s 2B24 82mm light mortar, although the level of automation suggests it might be a new custom-built system tailored for robotic use, reflecting a shift towards robotic warfare scenarios without direct human involvement.

Both Russia and Ukraine have been actively deploying robots for various military missions following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Ukraine has notably expanded its robot fleet over the past few years, utilizing platforms like the THeMIS for resupply and casualty evacuation, as well as armed systems such as the Droid TW 12.7 armed with a remotely operated .50-caliber machine gun.

In addition to the Kurier robots, Russia has also introduced the Omich robotic system, which has been instrumental in transporting supplies, equipment, and personnel across battlefields, underscoring the increasing role of robotics in modern warfare.
