Millions of Gmail users have received an ‘important’ alert regarding Google’s new AI smart features scanning their emails. The caution, shared by TV personality Lori Greiner on Instagram, advises users to be vigilant about their privacy.
Google’s AI capabilities aim to enhance user experience by offering smart searches, contextual replies, and email summaries. While Google claims not to read messages for personal use, Greiner expressed concerns about the extent of AI scanning in Gmail accounts.
Greiner urged Gmail users not to overlook the warning, emphasizing that AI scans all types of content, including financial documents, tax information, and personal conversations. To address this issue, users can easily disable the smart features in Gmail settings within 30 seconds.
To deactivate AI in Gmail, navigate to Settings, select “see all settings,” locate “Smart features,” and disable smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet. By unchecking boxes for Workspace and other products under “Manage Workspace Smart Features,” users can further limit data usage for AI.
Despite Google’s assurance that personal data remains confidential and secure, some users may still prefer to opt out of AI scanning. Google clarifies that its foundational AI models, like Gemini, are not trained on personal emails, ensuring privacy and data security for users.
If the idea of AI scanning emails is unsettling, users can opt out easily by adjusting settings in Gmail. It is important for users to stay informed and take necessary steps to protect their privacy online.
