“First-timer’s guide to navigating Disneyland Paris”

Date:

Visiting a Disney park for the first time can be daunting with the abundance of advice available, often conflicting and overwhelming. Prior to my inaugural trip to Disneyland Paris with my seven-year-old, I attempted to research but found the plethora of information challenging to navigate.

Reflecting on my experience, there are a few key things I wish I had known before embarking on this adventure. For first-time visitors like myself, it may prove beneficial to consider these insights during the planning phase.

Upon our late evening arrival on the initial day, we were greeted by a beautifully illuminated park and a vibrant atmosphere. Accustomed to British theme parks that typically close early, I was surprised by the extended operating hours at Disneyland. Even after the nightly shows, guests were leisurely strolling around the shops nearing 11 PM, showing no signs of retiring for the night.

While this schedule offers advantages by allowing ample time for enjoyment and riding attractions during quieter periods, parents with young children should strategize for necessary naps to ensure they can stay awake for the evening entertainment, which is truly captivating.

Although I had a loose itinerary outlining the attractions we wished to visit, some of our most cherished experiences were stumbled upon serendipitously. Timing our entry into the main Disneyland Park perfectly allowed us to witness Mickey in a parade unexpectedly. Similarly, wandering through the Studios Park led us to an impromptu viewing of Stitch Live, an engaging interactive show that left a lasting impression on my daughter, despite not being part of our initial plans.

While it is tempting to meticulously plan every detail of such trips, the enchanting nature of the park often rewards spontaneous exploration. Sometimes, it is best to meander and allow the magic to unfold naturally.

Comparing the amenities at UK theme parks, the offerings often pale in comparison. Limited food options predominantly feature burgers and hot dogs, while gift shops stock a few pricey toys and merchandise.

Staying near Disney Village, we were pleasantly surprised by the diverse array of establishments available, including numerous shops, restaurants, bars, and recognizable chains like Starbucks and McDonald’s. The variety extended to specialty stores offering exclusively Disney-branded items, upscale decor shops with luxurious scented candles and upscale gifts, and a large LEGO store.

Dining experiences at venues such as the new Regal View restaurant were a departure from typical theme park fare. The absence of standard fast-food items and unappealing surroundings was refreshing as we indulged in sophisticated French cuisine. Even the children’s meals were fresh, seasonal, and elegantly presented, providing a welcome option for those celebrating special occasions at the park.

For visitors with limited time, opting for Premier Access is a worthwhile upgrade. This service allowed us to access most rides in under five minutes, maximizing our enjoyment within a condensed timeframe. Additionally, individual ride passes are available for purchase, particularly beneficial if you have a must-visit attraction in mind.

Forewarned by my editor, a seasoned park visitor, I encountered the phenomenon known as ‘Disney tired’ post-trip. The combination of extensive walking, constant stimulation, and prolonged exposure to crowds left me thoroughly exhausted.

If you have the luxury of an extra day off, consider taking the day following your visit to recuperate, or at least catch a nap on the Eurostar journey home. Personally, I felt a sense of post-trip fatigue akin to jet lag, but the enchanting experience was certainly worth the temporary exhaustion.
