With waiting lists for organs reaching unprecedented levels, the NHS Blood and Transplant agency is implementing new preservation techniques for organs like lungs, livers, and kidneys.
Recent data showing a rise in mortality rates for individual NHS surgeons has impacted the number of operations performed. To address this, pilot centers will test innovative methods such as perfusion, a process that involves circulating oxygen-rich blood or nutrient-rich fluid through organs to prolong their viability and facilitate essential testing.
One notable success story from Freeman Hospital is the life-saving operation on Max Johnson, captured in a 2018 TV documentary. Max, on the brink of death, underwent a heart transplant after being kept alive by a heart pump for seven months. The successful transplant, made possible by the generous donation of nine-year-old Keira Ball’s heart, showcased the hospital’s expertise and dedication.
The potential implementation of perfusion techniques across the UK could establish the world’s first national network focused on reviving organs for transplantation, drawing inspiration from Spain’s renowned organ donation system. The opt-out law in England, championed by the Mirror campaign, has significantly influenced public attitudes toward organ donation.
The adoption of perfusion technology could result in up to 750 additional life-saving transplants annually, as demonstrated by its success in Tyneside. Newcastle’s Hospitals NHS Trust, home to Freeman Hospital, has been a pioneer in organ perfusion since achieving the UK’s first lung perfusion transplant in 2009.
Health Minister Dr. Zubir Ahmed, an experienced transplant surgeon, endorsed the program as a potential game-changer in saving numerous lives. The pilot sites for kidney transplants include Cambridge, Newcastle, Oxford, Edinburgh, Royal Free, Manchester, and Hammersmith, showcasing a collaborative effort to advance transplant care nationwide.
The Mirror’s Change the Law for Life campaign led to the implementation of an opt-out organ donation system in England in May 2020. Under this law, individuals are presumed donors unless they explicitly opt out, ensuring that loved ones’ consent is always sought before proceeding with donation.
