British Gas, a prominent energy company, has provided advice for households in the UK gearing up to confront severe snowfall anticipated this weekend.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow, commencing at 3 pm on Saturday in Scotland and extending until 6 am on Sunday. Additionally, warnings for strong winds have been issued in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. These alerts caution that Storm Dave may lead to power outages during the weekend.
The snow warning, affecting north-west Scotland, indicates the potential for up to 20cm of snow accumulation in certain areas, along with a risk of flooding due to an expected 50mm of rainfall.
British Gas has compiled a set of recommendations for households dealing with snow, advising individuals to take various precautions. Suggestions include improving insulation by sealing gaps around windows and doors, protecting pipes, and installing insulating tubing on exposed boiler, heating, or water supply pipes.
The company also stressed the importance of testing smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, particularly for those using indoor heating sources like a log burner, and locating the stopcock for potential water supply shutdown in case of a pipe burst.
British Gas further advised preparing for potential heating loss, suggesting keeping essential items like sleeping bags, blankets, and warm coats readily available. They recommended assembling an emergency kit with at least three days’ worth of food, essentials, medicines, drinking water, non-perishable food, snacks, blankets, a torch, batteries, and a phone charger for emergencies.
For car owners, British Gas highlighted the importance of conducting checks on brakes, heater, tires, and windscreen wipers to ensure they are in optimal condition for winter weather. They also emphasized the significance of checking on the well-being of others during severe weather conditions, recommending plans for staying in touch with household members and assisting elderly or vulnerable individuals during cold spells.
