Three individuals have lost their lives, and two others sustained injuries following a helicopter crash onto a well-visited beach, prompting a significant rescue operation.
The incident occurred at Kalalau Beach on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, where a helicopter carrying four passengers and one pilot went down on Thursday afternoon, as confirmed by the local fire department. Regrettably, three individuals were declared deceased, while the remaining two were transported to Wilcov Medical Centre for medical attention. The severity of their injuries remains undisclosed.
The helicopter, operated by Airborne Aviation, crashed around 3:45 pm local time.
Kalalau Beach, a renowned destination on many travelers’ bucket lists, is celebrated for its breathtaking, unspoiled landscapes, including towering cliffs, azure waters, and golden sands. However, its secluded setting necessitates an arduous 11-mile trek for visitors to reach this picturesque spot.
Situated along the Na Pali Coast on Hawaii’s northern shore, the beach attracts numerous helicopter tours.
Various rescue teams, such as the Kauai Fire Department, Kauai Police Department, Kauai Emergency Management Agency, US Coast Guard, American Medical Response, and the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, were dispatched to the crash scene on Thursday.
Due to the challenging location of the beach, emergency responders had to utilize both air and sea methods to reach the injured passengers.
While the cause of the crash remains unclear, the National Transport Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration have been notified and are preparing to conduct a joint investigation.
