Nazi German warships that were scuttled in the Danube River during the Second World War are resurfacing due to plummeting water levels, highlighting the extreme heat and drought affecting Europe this summer. The upcoming fifth heat wave, starting on Tuesday, is expected to bring scorching temperatures to western Europe, with some areas nearing 40 degrees Celsius. The Copernicus climate monitoring service confirmed that June and July were the hottest on record in western Europe, resulting in approximately 25,000 heat-related deaths.
The intense heat has led to devastating wildfires and dwindling water levels, with the Danube experiencing record lows. Climate scientists emphasize that these exposed wrecks serve as a stark reminder of the escalating impacts of fossil fuel-driven climate change, exacerbating heatwaves, droughts, wildfires, and impacting various sectors across Europe.
Historians estimate that up to 200 warships were deliberately sunk by the Nazis near the Serbian city of Prahovo in September 1944. The receding waters of the Danube have unveiled various relics, including a German military motorcycle in Hungary, an unexploded British bomb in Slovakia, and possibly ancient mammoth remains in Bulgaria.
The critically low water levels have raised concerns for several countries along the Danube, prompting actions such as water restrictions for crop irrigation in Romania and the deployment of measures to maintain nuclear power plants in Romania and Hungary. The situation has prompted calls for better preservation of natural resources and heightened awareness of the impacts of climate change.
The changing climate patterns are evident in the significant rise in temperatures compared to historical averages, with the western half of Europe experiencing a 2.79-degree Celsius increase. Climate experts warn that heat extremes and droughts are intensifying due to climate change, with these factors reinforcing one another. The drying of major rivers like the Danube signals severe environmental impacts, including forest damage and agricultural losses.
Looking ahead, experts predict even higher global temperatures in the coming years, exacerbated by ongoing greenhouse gas emissions. The current climate challenges serve as a precursor to more extreme events in the future if emission rates remain unchecked.
