“Rare Carnivorous Plant Found in Arctic Park”

Plant enthusiast Klaus Koehler made a unique discovery while exploring Sylvia Grinnell Territorial Park near Iqaluit in July. He stumbled upon a plant species rarely seen in the Arctic, which could have implications for the spread of invasive species in Northern regions as the climate undergoes warming.

Koehler retrieved a brownish weed-like plant known as bladderwort from a pond in the park. Despite its unremarkable appearance to the naked eye, he recognized the plant’s distinct features upon closer inspection.

The carnivorous bladderwort is adorned with small black balls, or bladders, containing partially digested flies. Typically found in more southerly regions, this insect-eating plant seldom ventures into the tundra.

The only previous documentation of bladderwort in the area dates back to 2012 when scientists discovered samples near Kimmirut, approximately 120 kilometers southwest of Iqaluit. This finding was documented in the scientific journal Phytokeys.

During three expeditions to the Arctic, researchers identified over 30 new plant species in the Arctic archipelago.

Koehler suggests that the appearance of bladderwort could signal a shift in the climate. While the Arctic has historically had few invasive species due to harsh conditions, the warming weather is creating a more favorable environment for plants not typically found in the region.

He anticipates changes in the ecosystem, with vegetation expanding as summers grow warmer and winters become milder, allowing invasive and native species to extend their ranges into the Arctic.

Senior research assistant Paul Sokoloff from Ottawa’s Museum of Nature, who was involved in the 2012 discovery of bladderwort, shares concerns about the potential introduction of non-native plants to the Arctic. Factors like birds, cargo ships, and Arctic visitors inadvertently transporting plant seeds could facilitate the spread of invasive species.

Sokoloff highlights the impact invasive species like Phragmite, a Eurasian grass that has damaged Ontario’s ecosystem, can have on native flora and fauna. While Koehler’s find is not expected to have a significant impact, the potential introduction of other invasive species poses a threat to Arctic biodiversity.

A study by scientists from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology identified over 2,500 species with the capability to invade the Arctic, potentially disrupting native ecosystems.

Koehler plans to send a sample of the Iqaluit bladderwort to the Museum of Nature for further analysis, aiming to contribute to a better understanding of the plant’s northward expansion.
