Ben Shannon, a graphic journalist at CBC and a proud father residing in Toronto, shared his experience of stumbling upon an international whistling contest while watching the BBC quiz show “Only Connect.” Intrigued by the idea, he signed up himself and his daughter, Sumire, for the Masters of Musical Whistling mailing list for fun.
Despite initially treating it as a lighthearted activity, Shannon and Sumire found themselves preparing for the contest seriously after being selected to compete in Los Angeles. Under the guidance of Carole Anne Kaufman, known as the Whistling Diva, they honed their skills for the competition.
The journey to the Masters of Musical Whistling competition was filled with dedicated practice sessions and unexpected revelations about their whistling abilities. Surrounded by talented contestants from around the world, Shannon and Sumire embraced the experience wholeheartedly.
Sumire impressed the audience with her rendition of the theme from “Doraemon,” winning silver in the kid’s category, while Shannon clinched gold in the level one adults category with his performance of “It’s Not a Moon.” The competition marked a significant personal achievement for Shannon, highlighting the importance of embracing sincerity and passion in pursuing one’s interests.
The event served as a reminder to Shannon of the value in shedding ironic detachment and allowing oneself to genuinely care about something. Despite his lingering ’90s teen persona, he found joy and fulfillment in the competition, emphasizing the significance of embracing moments of vulnerability and authenticity.
