A Ryanair plane experienced a window shattering incident in Greece last month due to engine parts malfunctioning, according to U.S. investigators. The incident occurred shortly after takeoff from Thessaloniki, where a fan blade from the Boeing 737-800’s right engine broke loose, causing damage to the window and fuselage. The investigation was transferred to the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) under international aviation regulations.
Evidence suggests bird strikes during takeoff, as bird remains were found inside the engine. The incident led to a 61-year-old passenger being partially sucked out of the window, resulting in neck and shoulder injuries. The passenger was rescued by fellow passengers after being lodged in the damaged window.
Flight attendants reported hearing loud vibrations and witnessing smoke or fog in the cabin, prompting the deployment of emergency oxygen masks. Passengers, including a doctor, assisted the injured passenger before landing by using a metal box to block the opening.
Maintenance records revealed that the failed engine’s fan blades had undergone ultrasonic inspections with no damage found previously. However, previous suspected bird strikes on the same engine raised concerns over potential pre-existing damage.
Ryanair, Boeing, and CFM International are cooperating with the investigation. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued directives in 2025 to strengthen engine coverings on Boeing 737s after previous incidents involving fan blade failures. Despite the directives, required modifications had not been made to the Ryanair plane involved in the incident.
The FAA and NTSB may review the deadline for the modifications following the recent accident. The plane, operated by Malta Air, a Ryanair subsidiary, landed safely after descending to burn fuel and returned to Thessaloniki. Passengers disembarked without further incident, with one receiving medical assistance.
