Russian Anti-War Party Leader Defies Authorities

Date:

The head of the sole registered anti-war party in Russia declared his intention to remain in the country and continue advocating for change, despite mounting pressure from authorities resulting in the party’s disqualification from the upcoming parliamentary elections. The Supreme Court’s recent ruling prohibited the post-Soviet liberal party Yabloko, meaning “apple” in Russian, from participating in the September vote. Party leader Nikolai Rybakov stated that the decision highlighted the government’s unease with the party’s anti-war stance on the conflict in Ukraine resonating with the public.

Rybakov emphasized the significance of the people’s support over the court’s verdict, citing the vocal backing demonstrated by hundreds of supporters outside the court premises chanting “shame” following the ruling. Yabloko, previously a prominent liberal voice in parliament, now holds only a few regional seats and lacks representation in the State Duma, which is predominantly controlled by the Putin-backed United Russia party.

While United Russia is anticipated to maintain its dominance in the upcoming elections, Rybakov expressed confidence that Yabloko would present a stronger challenge if permitted to participate. Yabloko is appealing the Supreme Court’s decision, which stemmed from allegations of undisclosed campaign backing from Western sources, among other charges that the party refutes.

Despite stringent censorship laws and wartime regulations prompting numerous opposition figures to flee or face prosecution, Rybakov affirmed his commitment to remain in Russia. He stressed the necessity of effecting change within the country to alter the political landscape. Public sentiment against the war is challenging to gauge due to stringent state controls on dissent. However, according to the Levada Center, a non-governmental pollster, the percentage of Russians expressing support for their armed forces’ actions in Ukraine decreased to 66% in July, the lowest level since February 2022.

Rybakov highlighted the growing support for Yabloko’s concise platform advocating for peace and a flourishing democratic Russia, demonstrating a significant segment of society desiring an end to the conflict. The social media sphere has been abuzz with videos backing Yabloko, showcasing individuals holding apples or dancing to Russian tunes referencing apples as a nod to their voting preference for the upcoming elections.
