Teen Hero Saves Endangered Shark in Dramatic Rescue

Date:

Finn Holland, a 15-year-old animal enthusiast, sprang into action when he learned about a shark stranded on a beach near his Maces Bay residence in New Brunswick. With determination, Finn and his family journeyed to the shoreline in their side-by-side vehicle. Upon arrival, they found the shark appearing injured and motionless but showing signs of life.

Despite initial hesitation due to the shark’s sizable two-meter, 70-kilogram frame, Finn courageously assisted the creature into the water by its tail, witnessing it swim away to safety. The rescued shark was later identified as a porbeagle shark, a species relatively uncommon in the area.

Finn expressed his astonishment at the experience, describing it as fascinating. His mother, Jill, praised his quick and selfless response, noting that such actions were characteristic of him. Their community, situated near Saint John, rarely sees shark sightings, as confirmed by shark expert Neil Hammerschlag.

Hammerschlag highlighted the rarity of encountering porbeagle sharks in their natural environment, emphasizing the species’ unique ability to regulate body temperature in cold waters. Despite this adaptability, the shark’s presence in shallow waters suggested potential distress or previous entanglement with fishing gear.

The decline in porbeagle shark populations due to overfishing has led to their endangered status, with protective measures in place since 2004. Hammerschlag commended Finn’s bravery in returning the shark to the ocean, recognizing the significance of conservation efforts for endangered species.

Reflecting on the community support garnered by his actions, Finn expressed a sense of fulfillment in aiding the shark without expectation of gratitude, acknowledging the intrinsic value of such encounters with wildlife.
