“Ronaldo hints at retirement after final Saudi Pro League season”

Date:

Cristiano Ronaldo has hinted that the current season in the Saudi Pro League may mark the end of his illustrious football career. The 41-year-old, who joined Al-Nassr in December 2022 and is set to see his contract expire in June, shared with Vogue magazine that he is unlikely to continue playing beyond this season.

Expressing his sentiments, Ronaldo stated, “This is probably my last year of football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy.” With an impressive track record of 976 career goals, the Portuguese forward recently tied the knot with his long-time partner, Georgina Rodriguez.

Looking ahead, Ronaldo mentioned, “I have my future all mapped out. I have so many things to keep me busy that to tell you just one thing is hard. Because football could leave a big hole, you have to fill your time in various ways, not just one.” He emphasized the importance of enjoying different activities, including traveling, playing padel, and relishing the rewards of his hard-earned achievements over the past 25 years.

As the 2026-27 SPL season marks Ronaldo’s 25th year in professional football, the seasoned player has accumulated five Ballon d’Or awards and five UEFA Champions League titles throughout his career. His significant contribution of 28 league goals last season played a pivotal role in Al-Nassr’s triumph as champions of Saudi Arabia, securing his first trophy with the club since his arrival in Riyadh and the club’s first league title since 2019.

Following his recent wedding celebrations, Ronaldo missed Al-Nassr’s season opener, witnessing the team’s 3-0 victory over Al-Fateh from the sidelines. Al-Nassr coach Ange Postecoglou acknowledged Ronaldo’s presence and expressed optimism for his upcoming participation in the King’s Cup match against Al-Diriyah.

In a related development, Ronaldo’s longtime rival Lionel Messi also raised doubts about his future in football after his father’s passing. Messi, 39, revealed uncertainties about continuing his football career, stating, “I don’t know how to carry on. I used to just play football, and now I’m really not sure if I’ll carry on doing it for much longer.”
