Assessments Completed in Summerland

Mayor Doug Holmes of Summerland announced that evaluations of the destruction caused by the Bald Range wildfire, which started on August 7, have been concluded.

About 22% of the 5,500 properties under evacuation orders in the south Okanagan region have now been put on evacuation alerts instead, as stated by Mayor Holmes on Sunday.

While hoping for more evacuees to come back soon, Mayor Holmes cautioned that fire conditions remain unpredictable and could change rapidly.

He emphasized the importance of staying vigilant and not being overconfident about the situation, given the volatility of wildfires.

Mayor Holmes acknowledged the frustration of residents awaiting information on the status of their properties post-fire but assured them that notifications and support would be provided promptly now that the damage assessments are finalized.

He added, “There’s still work to be done to repatriate everyone, but we anticipate most people returning fairly soon.”

Smoke Forecast and Wind Conditions: BCWS

According to a report from the BCWS on Sunday, smoke is expected to persist in central and southern British Columbia, with light winds prevailing at the beginning of the week.

The report states, “The province will experience hotter temperatures and drier conditions in the upcoming week, except for the far northwest region.”

Following the rapid escalation of wildfires across British Columbia last week, firefighting reinforcements arrived from various Canadian provinces and international locations like Mexico and Australia.

Blake Ross, representing the Australia-New Zealand firefighting team, mentioned that 40 firefighters from his region were deployed to combat the fires in B.C.
