“Western University Power Outage Imperils Research Samples”

Date:

A power outage lasting four days at Western University in London, Ontario has resulted in the loss of irreplaceable research samples, disrupted experiments, and raised concerns among biology students and faculty regarding the university’s ability to safeguard millions of dollars worth of scientific research. The outage, caused by a disruption at a campus power substation, has affected several key buildings including the Biological & Geological Sciences Building, Materials Sciences Addition, Chemistry Building, and Natural Sciences Centre, which are currently running on backup power.

Although power has been restored to most buildings, the four affected buildings are still on backup power as repairs continue. The university has limited access to these buildings as a precautionary measure and is working with students, faculty, and staff to address individual concerns, ensuring access to meet research needs.

This recent outage marks the fifth major disruption to biology research facilities since August 2025, causing frustration among the academic community. Beth MacDougall-Shackleton, a biology professor, expressed concerns about the reliability of power access, highlighting the impact on maintaining stable conditions for living organisms and temperature-sensitive materials crucial for research.

The outages have resulted in overheating growth chambers, thawing research sample freezers, and the inability to access animals used in studies, leading to significant financial losses and the potential loss of invaluable research materials. Matheus Sanita Lima, a fifth-year PhD candidate in biology, emphasized the irreplaceable nature of the lost samples, including specimens from extinct species, collections dating back decades, and materials from long-term studies.

Students, faculty, and staff have called for action, urging the university to improve communication during outages, invest in modernizing the electrical system, and increase maintenance staffing levels to prevent future disruptions. Concerns have been raised over the reputational damage to Western University and the potential loss of research funding, particularly in areas regulated by the Canadian Council on Animal Care, which could put significant research grants at risk.

The repeated power outages not only threaten the university’s standing in the research community but also pose risks to ongoing research projects and the well-being of laboratory animals. The need for immediate action to address these issues has been underscored by the academic community at Western University.
