“Summerland, B.C. Residents Return Home After Wildfire”

Date:

After enduring over a week of stress and worry, the majority of Summerland, B.C. residents can now return to their homes. Mayor Doug Holmes expressed relief, stating it was the long-awaited news for the community following the Bald Range wildfire outbreak on August 7. The evacuation order for 3,380 properties was lifted at 7 a.m. PT on Tuesday, marking the return of most Summerland residents.

Although a smaller number of properties had the evacuation order lifted over the weekend, 530 properties in Garnet Valley, Prairie Valley, and Meadow Valley still remain under evacuation orders. The rest of Summerland residents are under evacuation alert, being advised to stay prepared for immediate evacuation if necessary.

Holmes emphasized the safety concerns in the remaining areas due to unstable slopes, particularly in Garnet Valley where power has yet to be restored. The community’s water treatment plant being offline has led to a boil water advisory, while the landfill continues to burn, requiring waste to be transported to a regional district facility.

The fire’s impact assessment revealed approximately 150 structures damaged or destroyed, with around 40 of them located within the municipality. Efforts have been made to support those who suffered property loss, with social workers and counselors providing assistance and allowing affected individuals to visit their homes before the general re-entry.

As of the latest update, the 214-square-kilometre fire is still classified as out of control. Firefighters have managed to contain the fire on the southern and eastern fronts but are now focusing on the aggressive behavior exhibited on the western side.

Despite the challenges faced, progress is being made in managing the wildfire situation in Summerland.
