Ahead of the upcoming Easter holidays, experts are cautioning travelers about a common error that could lead to significant financial losses while packing for their trips.
During the hustle and bustle of busy airports, a seemingly harmless item in your luggage could become a tool for thieves to exploit your personal information and possessions.
According to Mike Harvey, who serves as the managing director of 1st Move International, including your family’s complete names and home addresses on luggage tags can create serious vulnerabilities.
Harvey emphasized the importance of finding a balance when filling out luggage tags to make your bag identifiable while safeguarding your personal data. Revealing too much information could expose you to risks such as identity theft, financial scams, home burglaries, and other security threats.
He advised against sharing home addresses, as this information could signal to thieves that your residence is unoccupied. Furthermore, he highlighted the risks of disclosing passport numbers and insurance details, which could aid scammers in constructing fraudulent schemes.
Additionally, mentioning valuable items on luggage tags could attract unwarranted attention to your belongings.
A recent investigation by Fox News revealed instances where discarded tags, like those provided by airlines, were exploited in a scam involving fraudulent reimbursement claims using travelers’ names and flight data.
To prevent these potential disruptions, Harvey recommended keeping luggage tags simple and limiting them to essential contact information such as names, phone numbers, and email addresses.
He further suggested including the full name matching the passport, a phone number with the country code for quick contact, and an email address, preferably a dedicated travel email, to separate travel-related communication from your primary inbox.
Regarding disposable tags, it is advisable to keep them attached to your belongings until safely discarding them at home.
Debates on these safety measures have emerged on platforms like Reddit, with users proposing alternatives such as placing contact details inside the suitcase or using work addresses or family members’ residences for external communication.
