“Bison Road Collisions Decline in N.W.T. Amid Wildfire Shift”

Date:

In the Northwest Territories (N.W.T.), the number of bison involved in road collisions seems to be decreasing. The N.W.T. Department of Environment and Climate Change (ECC) documented 60 collisions with bison from 2021 to 2025. However, in 2026, only one collision has been reported so far.

Terry Armstrong, a Bison Ecologist at ECC, attributes this decline in collisions to wildfires in the region. He explains that wildfires prompt bison to shift their habitats, seeking out newly burned areas for fresh vegetation, which they find appealing.

With extensive areas burnt in recent years, more bison are opting for recovering wildfire zones over roadside vegetation, leading to a reduction in collisions. This trend is positive news for the N.W.T.’s bison population, particularly since wood bison are classified as a threatened species both locally and nationally.

According to Armstrong, the current bison population in the region is estimated to be several thousand, with ECC approximating it at slightly over 2,500 individuals. Notably, collisions between 2021 and 2025 resulted in the deaths of at least 76 bison, with Highway 3 being a hotspot for such incidents.

As the rutting season approaches from August to September, Armstrong warns that bison may exhibit aggressive behavior on roads due to mating and dominance struggles. He emphasizes the importance of caution during this period, especially considering reduced visibility at dawn and dusk.

Armstrong advises drivers to proceed slowly, maintain distance from bison, and refrain from actions that could startle or provoke them. It is crucial to remember that bison are large, powerful animals and should not be approached or interacted with.

In conclusion, Armstrong highlights the significance of respecting bison as a unique and endangered species, urging people to exercise vigilance and care when sharing roads with these iconic North American mammals.
