“Blackpool’s Revival: From Empty Shops to Entertainment Hub”

Date:

Blackpool, a town with a notorious reputation, is often a subject of negative tales and experiences. From failed family holidays to hotel fires and unexpected encounters with protests, it seems to attract criticism.

During my initial visit, a local pub bartender humorously remarked on the lack of excitement in the town. The reality of Blackpool’s situation is evident in its numerous empty shops, with boarded-up windows and abandoned buildings scattered throughout. The town ranks third in the country for the highest rate of vacant shops, with some areas like Central Drive reaching 30% closure.

Residents express frustration over abandoned projects like the unmaterialized easyJet Hotel and the long-empty Odeon theater. Newly elected MP Chris Webb acknowledges the issue of empty properties in Blackpool, particularly in deprived areas like Bloomfield that suffer due to the impact on local businesses.

Efforts are underway to revitalize the town, including initiatives like the ‘Empty Properties Task Force’ targeting long-term vacant properties and the introduction of ‘High Street Rental Auctions’ to fill empty shops. While these actions may not completely solve Blackpool’s deprivation challenges or reduce its crime rate, they aim to bridge the gap between different aspects of the town.

Despite its winter desolation, Blackpool’s off-season popularity is on the rise, with a significant increase in rail trips compared to the previous year. Visitors are drawn by the town’s affordability, diverse attractions, and cultural offerings, such as the Showtown Museum and entertainment venues like Coral Island.

Plans for an all-purpose indoor arena and ongoing talks with a Premier League football club signal a potential shift towards year-round entertainment options in Blackpool. The town’s rich entertainment history continues to attract visitors seeking shows and unique experiences, showcasing Blackpool’s potential for growth and rejuvenation.
