Voters are set to participate in elections on Monday to determine the outcomes of three federal byelections in different ridings across Canada: North Vancouver-Capilano in British Columbia, Beaches-East York in Ontario, and Chicoutimi-Le Fjord in Quebec.
With the current distribution of seats in the House of Commons, the Liberals hold 170 seats, while opposition parties collectively possess 166 seats. To ensure control of the legislative agenda, the Liberals must secure victories in at least two of the upcoming byelections.
Chicoutimi-Le Fjord is anticipated to host a closely contested race, particularly following the departure of former Conservative MP Richard Martel, who recently transitioned to the Senate. The Liberals and Bloc Québécois are vying for the seat, with polling data suggesting a tight competition between the two parties. Daniel Gobeil represents the Liberals, while Caroline Dubé is the Bloc’s candidate.
Other candidates contending in Chicoutimi-Le Fjord include Régis Gaudreault for the Conservatives, Raphaël Émond for the New Democratic Party, and Nathe Perrone for the Green Party.
In Beaches-East York, the candidates are aiming to fill the vacancy left by former Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, who secured a significant victory in the 2025 federal election. The contenders in this riding are Tanveer Shahnawaz (Liberals), Jim Syrbos (Conservatives), Shannon Devine (NDP), and Bruce Livesey (Green Party).
Meanwhile, in North Vancouver-Capilano, candidates are competing for the seat vacated by former Liberal MP Jonathan Wilkinson, who recently became Canada’s ambassador to the European Union. The candidates in this riding are Braeden Caley (Liberals), Stephen Curran (Conservatives), Stephen Tweedale (NDP), and Shelley Luce (Green Party).
CBC News will provide special coverage of the byelections, led by chief political correspondent Rosemary Barton and Power & Politics host David Cochrane, starting at 9:30 p.m. ET and accessible on various streaming platforms.
If the Liberals face losses in all three byelections, they will have additional opportunities in the future to secure the necessary wins for a majority. Additionally, the prime minister has yet to call byelections in Quebec’s Saint-Hyacinthe-Bagot-Acton, Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie, and Laurier-Sainte-Marie ridings, as well as in Ontario’s Scarborough North riding.
Furthermore, Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall is expected to officially resign from her seat in the Saskatchewan riding of Yorkton-Melville on Monday, while Conservative MP Larry Brock plans to step down from his seat in the Ontario riding of Brantford-Brant South-Six Nations next month.
